Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
Carly Munzer, MSN, RN, PMHNP is a board-certified Mental Health Nurse Practitioner clinically educated in providing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders across the lifespan. Carly earned a bachelor’s degree in Biology at Skidmore College before attending the MGH Institute of Health Professions to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and master’s degree in Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nursing. While receiving her education, Carly worked as a phlebotomist and nursing assistant on the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at MGH where she worked with patients suffering with acute mental illness. Once she obtained her RN, she pursued nursing at McLean Hospital where she assisted in the care and treatment of those with mood disorders, trauma-spectrum disorders, eating disorders, and anxiety disorders for several years.
During her Master’s training, Carly served clinical rotations in the MGH Emergency Department where she assisted in the treatment planning of those with with various acute conditions. She proceeded to further specialize at Onward Psychiatry, seeing patients across the lifespan. She also spent a year in the MGH Outpatient Geriatric Clinic where she assisted in improving the quality of life of geriatric patients with mental health diagnoses and cognitive/behavioral changes.
Carly has begun her career working for the Acute Psychiatric Service in the MGH Emergency Department where she conducts emergency psychiatric evaluations to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, develops and implements treatment plans including medication management, and collaborates with other healthcare professions to provide acute crisis stabilization, connecting patients to various mental health resources in the greater Boston community. In this setting, she cares for individuals with suicidal or self-harming behavior, those experiencing acute psychosis, severe depression or manic episodes, and patients with substance intoxication, withdrawal, or overdose. In addition, she treats those with anxiety and panic disorders, personality disorders, cognitive disorders like dementia or delirium, trauma-related conditions, and somatic symptom disorders. Each patient requires immediate assessment and intervention to ensure patient safety and stabilization.
Carly possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish therapeutic relationships with patients and their families. She is passionate about improving mental health outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with mental illness, promoting overall well-being.
